JEE (Mains) or Joint Entrance Examination (Mains) is a highly important qualifying examination for Engineering and Architecture courses after std XII and is organised by JEE Apex Board located at CBSE Delhi.

The performance of the candidate in JEE Mains examination along with performance in the class 12 is the admission criteria to Undergraduate Engineering Programs at NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutions as well as the institutions funded by participating State Governments.

The Paper-1 (B. E./B. Tech.) of JEE (Main) will also be an eligibility test for the JEE (Advanced), which the candidate has to take if he/she is aspiring for admission to the undergraduate programmes offered by the IITs.

The States of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Nagaland and Odisha have joined JEE (Main) system.

Therefore, the candidates seeking admission to the institutions in these states, which were earlier admitting based on their State Level Examination, are also advised to appear for JEE Mains examination.

The Paper-2 of JEE (Main) is an admission criteria for B.Arch. courses.


Exam details

JEE Main is held by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in April every year.

The application process is online and it starts in November and the last date is upto mid- December. The important dates regarding application period, exam dates and result declaration dates are displayed on the corresponding website of CBSE board. (

Depending upon the course (s) candidates are seeking admission, they may take Paper-1 B.E./B. Tech.), or Paper-2 B. Arch./ B. Planning), or both.

Who is eligible?

Only those candidates whose date of birth falls on or after October 01, 1990 are eligible for appearing for JEE Mains 2015. The Date of Birth will be considered as recorded in the Secondary Education Board/University certificate.

Candidates must have taken at least five subjects in class 12th/ qualifying examination in order to be eligible.

Also, Only those candidates who have passed their Class 12th Exam or any equivalent qualifying examination in 2013 or 2014; or those who are appearing in their Class 12th Exam or any equivalent qualifying examination in 2015 are eligible to appear in JEE (Main) – 2015.

Each correct question carries 4 marks and a wrong question carries (-1) marks.
